Welcome to the School of Religion and Theology (SORAT), University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg Campus. This website is all about the work of the School on the PMB Campus. While the work of our School ranges across the whole spectrum of religious and theological studies, the PMB Campus specialises in Christian Theology and related disciplines.

We have come a long way since our beginnings in the mid-1980s but the foundations laid and the theological trajectories initiated continue to sustain us. Our primary commitment remains to our South African and African contexts and we continue to strive to do and teach theology in a way that engages with our changing realities.

The struggles against apartheid and racism have shaped us, and we remain resolute in resisting the legacy they have left. However, there are now new calls upon us to be prophetic. The God of life summons us to work on issues of culture, gender, HIV/Aids, sexuality, development, economics, the environment, interfaith dialogue and other concerns.

We believe that our task is to train a new generation of leaders who will be academically, theologically, and contextually equipped to serve the church and society.

We continue our commitment to ecumenical theological education. Both our student body and our academic staff reflect the broad range of Christian confessions in our country.

We are proud too of the Pietermaritzburg Cluster of Theological Institutions and the various links we have with theological institutions on the continent and around the world.
